Rounding Off Decimals
We know how to round off numbers. Now, we shall learn about ‘rounding off’ the
decimals.
Rounding off a Decimal to the Nearest One
« First, examine the tenths place digit.
« If the tenths place digit is less than 5, then replace each digit after decimal point
with 0 and do not make any changes to the digits before decimal point.
« If the tenths place digit is 5 or greater than 5, then increase the ones place digit by
1 and replace each digit after decimal point with 0.
Example : Round off the following decimals to the nearest one :
a. 5.46 b. 31.62 c. 252.56
Digit at tenths
place is less than 5.
Solution : a. Given decimal = 5. 4 6
So, replace each digit after decimal point with 0.
\ Rounded off number of 5.46 = 5.00.
