Expanded and Short Form

Expanded Form

Let us take a numeral 56489 and put its digits in a place value chart :

Here, we see that the numeral contains 5 ten thousands, 6 thousands, 4 hundreds, 8
tens and 9 ones.

Thus, 56489 = 5 ten thousands + 6 thousands + 4 hundreds + 8 tens + 9 ones

= 5 × 10000 + 6 × 1000 + 4 × 100 + 8 × 10 + 9

= 50000 + 6000 + 400 + 80 + 9

Short Form

There is a numeral which contains 5000000 + 800000 + 70000 + 4000 + 300 + 50 + 1.
Now, we have to write it in the short form.

Thus, 5000000 + 800000 + 70000 + 4000 + 300 + 50 + 1
= 5 × 1000000 + 8 × 100000 + 7 × 10000 + 4 × 1000 + 3 × 100 + 5 × 10 + 1

= 5 ten lakhs + 8 lakhs + 7 ten thousands + 4 thousands + 3 hundreds

+ 5 tens + 1 one
= 58 lakhs + 74 thousands + 3 hundreds + 5 tens + 1 one

= 58,74,351

Example : Write in expanded form :
a. 4056869 b. 385926

Solution : a. 4056869 = 4 tens lakhs + 0 × lakhs + 5 ten thousands

+ 6 thousands + 8 hundreds + 6 tens + 9 ones

= 4 × 1000000 + 0 × 100000 + 5 × 10000

+ 6 × 1000 + 8 × 100 + 6 × 10 + 9

= 4000000 + 0 + 50000 + 6000 + 800 + 60 + 9

b. 385926 = 3 lakhs + 8 ten thousands + 5 thousands + 9 hundreds

+ 2 tens + 6 ones

= 3 × 100000 + 8 × 10000 + 5 × 1000 + 9 × 100
+ 2 × 10 + 6

= 300000 + 80000 + 5000 + 900 + 20 + 6
