P. 13

Example : Write in short form :

                          a. 5000000 + 100000 + 40000 + 3000 + 80 + 6

                          b. 60000 + 5000 + 700 + 20 + 8
            Solution : a. 5000000 + 100000 + 40000 + 3000 + 80 + 6

                                = 5 × 1000000 + 1 × 100000 + 4 × 10000 + 3 × 1000 + 0 × 100

                                    + 8 × 10 + 6
                                = 5 ten lakhs + 1 lakh + 4 ten thousands + 3 thousands

                                    + 0 hundred + 8 tens + 6 ones

                                = 51 lakhs + 43 thousands + 0 hundred + 8 tens + 6 ones

                                = 51,43,086
                          b. 60000 + 5000 + 700 + 20 + 8

                                = 6 × 10000 + 5 × 1000 + 7 × 100 + 2 × 10 + 8

                                = 6 ten thousands + 5 thousands + 7 hundreds + 2 tens + 8 ones
                                = 65 thousands + 7 hundreds + 2 tens + 8 ones = 65,728
            Place Value and Face Value

The position of a digit (in the place value chart) in a number shows its place value while
the numerical value of a digit is its face value .

The place value of a digit changes according to its place but its face value always
            remains unchanged.

« Place value of 0 is always 0.

The place value of a digit increases by 10 times as we move left on the place value chart
and decreases by 10 times as we move right.

Example : Find the place value of digits in :
                          a. 45632 b. 3849268

                                                    5 × 1000 (Th) = 5000

                                                    4 × 10000 (TTh) = 40000
