P. 16
Successor and Predecessor
The number which comes just after a number is called the successor of that number.
By adding 1 to a number, we get the successor of the given number.
Example : Write the successor of :
a. 843216481 b. 64321940
c. The largest number of 7 digits.
Solution : Number + 1 = Successor
a. 843216481 + 1 = 843216482
b. 64321940 + 1 = 64321941
c. The largest number of 7 digits = 9999999 + 1
= 10000000 (The smallest number of 8 digits).
The number which comes just before a number is called the predecessor of that number.
By subtracting 1 from a number, we get the predecessor of the given number.
Example : Write the predecessor of :
a. 9000000 b. 295632890
c. The smallest number of 7 digits.
Solution : Number – 1 = Predecessor
a. 9000000 – 1 = 8999999
b. 295632890 – 1 = 295632889
c. The smallest number of 7 digits = 1000000
– 1 = 999999 (The largest number of 6 digits).
Forming Numbers
In formation of numbers with the given digits, we may say that a number is an
arranged group of digits. Numbers may be formed with or without repetition of digits.
Let us observe the formation of some numbers without repetition of digits.
a. 8, 4, 6, 3, 4, 2, 1
Greatest Number : 8644321
Smallest Number : 1234468
b. 6, 4, 3, 2, 1, 4, 5
Greatest Number : 6544321
Smallest Number : 1234456
