We eat food at our home. It is
really a fun. But, what a fun it is to
eat together in a large gathering
where the special food is cooked
for the occasion!
Community Eating
There are many occasions when a lot of people eat together. For such
occasions special dishes are cooked. Eating food on such occasions is known
as community eating. Eating together promotes a feeling of love and
togetherness.
Weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, house-warming ceremonies and religious
festivals are some occasions when people eat together. On these special
occasions of celebrations, people invite their relatives, friends and loved
ones. Elaborate arrangements are made to welcome the guests. Pandals are
set-up in open spaces, banquet halls are booked or arrangements are made
on big terraces of the houses and lawns. Special food is cooked either by
halwais or catering houses. Special care is taken to make sure that all the
guests present fully enjoy the food and the occasion.
On certain religious occasions in our country, community eating is organized
on a large scale. On such occasions, food is served to all the visitors
regardless of faith, religion and background. Such community eating is
termed as Langar and Bahndara.
In Langars and Bhandaras, all the people sit together on the floor and eat
the same meal. Many people volunteer to help in cooking and serving meal.
In Gurudwara, hundreds of people sit together and enjoy langar.
