Estimation in Division
We estimate the quotient while dividing. It is useful when the given number is
divided by a 2-digit number. Remainder is ignored while estimating the quotient.
4
21 8 4 rounds to 20 8 0 (nearest 10)
2 8
To solve this we think of 8 ÷ 2 – 8
The estimated quotient is 4. 0
3
32 8 8 rounds to 30 9 0 (nearest 10)
3 9
To solve this we think of 9 ÷ 3 – 9
The estimated quotient is 3. 0
39 1 2 3 rounds to 40 1 2 0 (nearest 10) 3
4 1 2
To solve this we think of 12 ÷ 4 – 1 2
The estimated quotient is 3. 0
10
36 4 3 2 rounds to 40 4 0 0 (nearest 100)
4 4 0
To solve this we think of 43 ÷ 4 – 4 0
The estimated quotient is 10. 0
20
41 8 2 7 rounds to 40 8 0 0
(nearest 100) 4 8 0
To solve this we think of 80 ÷ 4 – 8 0
The estimated quotient is 20. 0
15
58 9 5 2 rounds to 60 9 5 0
(nearest 10) 6 9 5
To solve this we think of 95 ÷ 6 – 6
The estimated quotient is 15. 3 5
– 3 0
5
Rounding to the nearest 10 gives a better estimation.
