            Word Problems

Example : 16 pencils are packed in a box. How many

boxes will be needed to pack 272 pencils ?

            Solution : 272 ÷ 16 = ?

                                         1 7 10 + 7 = 17
                                16 2 7 2 16 2 7 2

                                    – 1 6 – 1 6 0
                                                         or
                                       1 1 2 1 1 2

                                   – 1 1 2 – 1 1 2
                                          0 0

Thus, 17 boxes will be needed to pack 272 pencils.

Example : A litre of petrol takes Mr Verma’s car a
distance of 18 km. How many litres of

petrol would be needed to go 756 km ?

            Solution : 756 ÷ 18 = ?

                                     4 2 40 + 2 = 42
                             18 7 5 6 18 7 5 6

                                 – 7 2 – 7 2 0
                                                     or
                                       3 6 3 6

                                 – 3 6 – 3 6
                                        0 0

\ Mr Verma would need 42 litres of petrol to go 756 km.
