P. 61
Example : 85 sweets were distributed among 15 children. How many
sweets did each child get ? How many sweets were left over ?
Solution : 85 ÷ 15 = ?
Step 1 : First estimate the quotient.
15 85 rounds to 20 100
To solve this we think of 10 ÷ 2
The estimated quotient is 5.
Step 2 : Let us try the estimated quotient.
15 × 6 = 90
90 > 85
So, try another smaller number.
15 × 5 = 75
75 < 85, so take 5 as the quotient because it is smaller and
closest to the dividend.
Step 3 : Divide :
5 Checking :
15 85 15 × 5 + 10 = 85
– 75
10 Quotient = 5, Remainder = 10
Thus, each child got 5 sweets. There were 10 sweets left over.
